Fewer People To Thank

Kerry Kerstetter

If nothing else comes out of this debate over reforming Social Security, I hope more people, especially the younger ones, are at least made aware of how phony the personalized savings aspect of the current program is. There are still far too many who believe that the taxes they are paying now are already going into a personally earmarked trust account; when in actuality, it is nothing more than an income redistribution program, with larger amounts of money going from fewer and fewer workers directly to older folks, many of whom are still working. As facetious as it may sound, given the government bureaucracy's classic ineptitude in doing anything efficiently, it would be more cost effective to just have workers "adopt" senior citizens and send them their money directly and eliminate all of the middleman costs.
