Laughable Nonsense

Frank responds to my post on the rubbish about Social Security being a intergenerational compact much as a I thought he would—with a real knee-slapper:

Mr. Hogberg was probably also not present at the signing of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. None of them have been reversed due to his absence. The bad news for Mr. Hogberg is this: the social contract does not require his approval. If he disapproves of the compact, he is free to fall out of the work force, or work in another country. His choosing to work here is an implicit acceptance (and approval) of the compact. He approves of it every damned day, and is foolish to suggest otherwise.

I like how Frank tries to explain that I really am free because I can become a bum (thanks Frank!) or move to France (thanks even more Frank!). Still, I’m not free to live here and drop out of the Social Security system. Frank’s logic is that since I choose to stay and work here, I’m accepting the compact. Well, let’s apply that logic elsewhere, shall we? Since Frank chooses to stay and work here, he must approve of capital gains and dividends only being taxed at 15%. He must approve of the fact that we invaded Iraq. He must approve of the fact that we don’t have a single-payer health system, and that gay marriage is not legal in most states, and that we have laws against drugs. After all, one can argue that those also represent intergenerational compacts, and since Frank chooses to stay here, he must be giving implicit acceptance of those things. And since those things are intergenerational compacts, it must mean that it would be sacrilege for Frank to change those things. Now that’s settled, I’m sure Frank will just accept those things and stop arguing about them on his blog. And if you believe that, there’s this bridge…
