DeMint Proposal Gaining Traction in House
As anticipated. From CQ.com ($):A Senate proposal to create individual retirement accounts from Social Security's surplus is gaining some traction in the House as negotiations among key Republican tax writers intensify. House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., has yet to endorse any specific plan to change Social Security as he puts together a broad “retirement security” bill that will probably include savings-related tax breaks and a permanent extension of capital gains and dividends rate cuts. But Thomas appears likely to make a more definitive statement about the Social Security element of his emerging plan as early as Wednesday.
