Snowstorm Aftermath
The recent Snowstorm on the Capitol was a huge success. Students for Saving Social Security received news in the New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald and many more papers! As exciting as it was outside at the Snowstorm, things got pretty hot inside the Capitol as well. Students were fired up to make their voices heard. Among the most noteworthy moments of the meetings with Senate offices: Senator Blanche Lincoln refused to meet with us after we had already scheduled and confirmed a meeting. As our communications director, Ben Ferguson said, “This is exactly what’s wrong with Congress today, if they can’t even keep a promised meeting, there’s no way we’ll ever get our promised Social Security benefits." And Senator Lieberman's staff told us they want to raise taxes! Patrick Wetherille, co-founder of SecureOurFuture.org, got it right when he said, “Social Security is facing a crisis because of the tax and spend policies of Congress. New taxes are not the solution. They will only hurt the economy and cost young people jobs.” The proposal from Lieberman’s office was a double whammy for young people. Not only might we not have our retirement money, but we’ll pay higher taxes too.Posted by at July 18, 2005 10:25 AM | Print
